This guided cycling tour encompasses the entire Schlei region, the lanscape of Angeln in the north and Schwansen in the south of the Schlei Fjord. This region is a part of the most charming stretches of land in Schleswig-Holstein. The journey’s routes meander between the Baltic Sea and the Schlei Fjord, providing breath-taking scenes. The past ice age surely left its mark on the landscape. Day trips are not without a few slopes, all of which are very manageable.Overnight accommodation is in two locations: the comfortable Hotel in Schleswig, a well-situated bed & breakfast in peaceful Ulsnis and in the cozy Hotel Kappeln, which has a famous pub due to the German television series “Country Doctor”.
On the program list is a visit to the historically packed town of Schleswig with its many pretty town homes and a cathedral with the Brüggemann alter from the time of Dürer. The royal gardens and the famous “globehouse” of the Gottorf Castle built by Friedrich III are also exceptional attractions. Idyllic villages along the Schlei and Germany’s smallest town, Arnis, will be stops en route. In addition, there is the opportunity to see the Schleimünde Bird Sanctuary and gain insight about the herring fishery.
Schleswig-Holstein’s ever-evolving history led to the construction of quite impressive estates and manors. Just a few of the highlights are: the Hemmelmark Estate which Prince Heinrich renovated in 1903, the Ludwigsburg Estate with its noteworthy “colourful hall” from the baroque time period and the Damp, Roest, Grünholz and Saxtorf Manors. Some of them open their doors only for the velonobilis groups and oftentimes tours will be given by the property owners themselves. The boat trip from Schleswig to Kappel with round out the trip and provide an impression from the water of the fantastic sights seen along the way.
